Simplifying Your Life with the 33 Closet Rule
Calling all minimalists! Whether you’re a full-fledged minimalist, a little minimalism-curious, or just doing some spring cleaning, let’s chat about decluttering your closet and transforming your relationship with fashion. Every minimalist will tell you there are more benefits to reducing clutter in your home besides the aesthetic, it’s known to reduce stress and anxiety. So, how can we spread that minimalist magic throughout our daily lives?
Enter the 33 Closet Rule, inspired by the Project 333 Challenge from 2010. The challenge essentially involves picking 33 garments (or less) from your closet to wear for three whole months. After that, you can swap out your wardrobe for another 33 garments. Learn how to pinpoint your personal style, while (hopefully) realizing what you can live without or part ways with and donate!
It’s all about simplifying parts of your life so you can focus on the things that matter. This is perfect for those mornings when your closet seems overwhelming, or if you need some inspiration to refresh your look before going on a shopping spree.
Ready to give it a try? Here’s how to get started:
1. Check the forecast. You’ll want to start by considering the season for the next three months. If you’re heading into the winter months, pick pieces that’ll keep you cozy. And hey, if you need that extra coat, grab it! This challenge is about ease, not restrictions!
2. Select your 33. Tops, pants, dresses/skirts – they all count. Don’t include items like sleepwear, workout gear, shoes and accessories. Although, you’ll be surprised at how far seven bottoms and ten tops can take you!
If you’re unsure about an item, ask yourself:
-
Does this item fit comfortably?
-
Would I but this item today?
-
Have I worn this item in the past two weeks?
